CC Lemonade standYou never know when or where your passion will show up.  One chilly afternoon about two years ago, Claire O’Malley and her next door neighbor, Carmella Duell, were outside playing when Carmella’s mom told them to put a jacket on.  The girls resisted the idea and the typical mom response was shouted out. “You know some people don’t have coats to wear in the cold.”  That is when these two girl’s hearts and minds opened about helping local homeless families.  Shortly after, the girls went into action, determining ways to help those who couldn’t help themselves.

Z.C. went to school through eighth grade. She had been the victim of abuse from the hands and voice of her mother for her entire life. She believed that this reality was her only option. Being a young mom of one child, Z.C. was the third generation in her family to encounter homelessness and poverty. Z.C. believed there was no way out.

However, Z.C. made the life-changing decision to attend the recently launched Seeds of Change Program at Family Promise.

They found us through a simple Google search: Central Florida, Homeless, Families. Family Promise of Greater Orlando popped up in the search. The Kamran Farid Foundation was looking for a nonprofit to partner with and provide mattresses through their business, Rise Mattress.

Turning Hopeless Into Hope

Angela could not catch a break. She sat by her mother’s side until she quietly passed on to heaven. Life did not pause for mourning. Angela’s children needed her even though she felt like she lost her footing in a world without her mother. Several weeks later, Angela pulled in the neighborhood to find multiple fire trucks in front of her Cleveland, Ohio home. The kind, soot-covered firefighter walked over to her and said, “Ma’am, we did everything we could but the fire was too powerful and I’m sorry to tell you but we couldn’t save your house.” Angela broke down in tears. Everything normal was gone. She had nowhere to turn.
